Dyslexia Assistance at In2ition

Marcelle recently attended a course on the Orton-Gillingham- Multisensory Structured Language (MSL) approach to teaching reading. This approach is a phonics based program which utilizes the visual, auditory and kinesthetic systems to increase memory recall and cement learning. The approach was originally designed to help dyslexic students but has proved successful with students with learning difficulties and in deed all students benefit from its structured and sequenced approach to phonic awareness.

The initial week long course is followed up with on-going requirements, including practical assessment of students and course material submitted to the Australian Dyslexia Association (ADA) for assessment. This course takes a year to complete and is benchmarked at Post Graduate level, offering an Associate Level membership and culminating in qualification in Certificate  I- Educational Therapist.

The material presented follows our current approach of Direct and ExpIicit Instruction. We will be continuing with this style of instruction as well as incorporating the MSL approach to deepen learning and ensure there are no gaps in our student’s phonic awareness.

For students who are identified as having Dyslexia, more information will be available to parents including options for a full assessment and help with school liason.

Dyslexia is defined by the ADA as,

...a specific brain-based learning difference often characterised by difficulties in reading, spelling and writing despite traditional teaching methods and adequate intelligence.

These difficulties result from a deficit in phonological processing at the word level and there may be accompanying difficulties in working memory processing speed and oral language.

There is more information available at our Centre. Please call if you wish to discuss this further or check out the Australian Dyslexia Association (ADA)   website. There is always help if you need it!
