Dyslexia and Learning Difficulties

Marcelle is nearing completion of the Orton-Gillingham- Multisensory Structured Language (MSL) method of teaching reading. This approach is a phonics based program which utilizes visual, auditory and kinesthetic systems to increase memory recall and deepen learning. The approach was originally designed to help dyslexix students however all students benefit from its structured and sequenced approach to phonic awareness.

The initial week long course is followed up with on-going requirements, including practical assessment of students and course material submitted to the Australian Dyslexia Association (ADA) for assessment. This course takes a year to complete and is benchmarked at Post Graduate level, offering an Associate Level membership and culminating in qualification in Certificate  I - Educational Therapist.

The material presented follows our current approach of Direct and ExpIicit Instruction. We will be continuing with this style of instruction as well as incorporating the MSL approach to deepen learning and ensure there are no gaps in our student’s phonic knowledge.

For students who are identified as having Dyslexia, more information isavailable to parents including options for a full assessment and communication with your child's school. We endeavoiur to work in partnership with the school when possible and where staff are supportive and receptive and usually find this to be the case.

Dyslexia is defined by the Australian Dyslexia Association  as:-

...a specific brain-based learning difference often characterized by difficulties in reading, spelling and writing despite traditional teaching methods and adequate intelligence.

These difficulties result from a deficit in phonological processing at the word level and there may be accompanying difficulties in working memory processing speed and oral language.

There is more information available at our Centre. Please call for a confidential dsicussionr or check out the Australian Dyslexia Association (ADA)   website. Assistance is available.

                                              Dyslexia Update Term 2, 2012

In2ition  has been servicing the Maths, English and Reading tuition needs of students in the Batemans Bay district for over 15 years. We have developed a strong reputation and have assisted hundreds and hundreds of students to develop confidence, acquire sound learning habits and to experience success.

While we continue to offer after-school tuition, in response to a growing trend, we have expanded in to the field of learning difficulties with a specialization in Dyslexia.

It is estimated that approximately 5 to 12% of  students suffer from Dyslexia,

Of the 20% of learners who are classified as having a learning difficulty, 80% of these probably suffer from Dyslexia. (Source: ADA)

Schools can be ill-equipped to cater for these students. It’s a specialist care issue requiring specialist training.

Specialist treatment involves accurate diagnosis followed by explicit and systematic instruction that follows the correct scope and sequence.

It is our experience that in the Eurobodalla, many concerned parents take their children to Wollongong, Canberra or Sydney for a diagnosis and report costing around $500. Very little follows in the way of instructional programming and planned remediation and problems often persist and grow.

At In2ition there is a better alternative for families on the South Coast at a fraction of the cost.

Co-owner of In2ition, Marcelle Sternbeck-Rutter, after completing her BA, is undertaking post-graduate study in Special Education / Learning Difficulties through Macquarie University.

Additionally, she has received intensive instruction in the internationally regarded Orton-Gillingham method  of assisting students with Dyslexia. This rigorous course will shortly see her become one of only a few people in NSW with this specialist qualification.

Marcelle is able to profile for dyslexia and determine the extent of learning difficulties BUT, more importantly, she is able to provide and deliver appropriate instructional strategies that work. If your child has a Dyslexia-based learning difficulty,  your school may not be equipped to deal with it. Identification and  correct instruction will make a difference.

Don’t count on your school to get it right.

Don’t expect your child will grow out of it.

Don’t expect learning issues will decrease.

Our latest progress reports show that ALL children suffering from Dyslexia who have been introduced to our program, have displayed an overall increase in RETAINED phonological knowledge of approximately 30% over the last 3 terms.

At In2ition, EXPECT your child to be specifically and accurately identified, an appropriate instructional program developed and delivered in the correct sequence. and for the instructional methods we deliver, to produce more successful children and relieved parents.
